‘Bike It U Can 2’ has been running in various boroughs across London since 2010, with Bike It Officer James Scott originally starting off the project in the borough of Tower Hamlets. The project is aimed at teaching parents of children at ‘Bike It Plus’ schools to learn to cycle – providing them with the confidence, skills and equipment they need to start cycling (including a bike which they get to keep at the end of the course!) To show the inspiring results we made a short video with the enthusiastic parents at two of the London schools we have worked in – St Mary Magdalene Primary School in Westminster and Snaresbrook Primary School in South Woodfood.
Realising that many primary school children couldn’t cycle to school without their parents alongside them was an issue that needed to be addressed if we are to make cycling to school the norm for the surrounding school communities. We also wanted to reach out to communities where people had not had the opportunities to learn to cycle before, which led us to schools in very diverse communities, and to parents from very mixed backgrounds.
